In 2011, Malappuram had population of 4,112,920 of which male and female were 1,960,328 and 2,152,592 respectively. In 2001 census, Malappuram had a population of 3,625,471 of which males were 1,754,576 and remaining 1,870,895 were females. Malappuram District population constituted 12.31 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Malappuram District was at 11.39 percent of Maharashtra population.

There was change of 13.45 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Malappuram District recorded increase of 17.09 percent to its population compared to 1991.
