In 2011, Ujjain had population of 1,986,864 of which male and female were 1,016,289 and 970,575 respectively. In 2001 census, Ujjain had a population of 1,710,982 of which males were 882,871 and remaining 828,111 were females. Ujjain District population constituted 2.74 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Ujjain District was at 2.84 percent of Maharashtra population.

There was change of 16.12 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Ujjain District recorded increase of 23.70 percent to its population compared to 1991.
